Large-eddy simulation of a wind-turbine array subjected to active yaw control

Abstract. This study validates large-eddy simulation (LES) for predicting the flow through a wind turbine array subjected to active yaw control. The consists of three miniature turbines operated in both non-yawed and yawed configurations under full-wake partial-wake conditions, which tunnel measurements are available. turbine-induced forces parametrised by different models: standard actuator disk model (ADM-std), blade element (ADM-BE), also referred as rotational (ADM-R), line (ALM). time-averaged power outputs profiles wake statistics (normalised streamwise mean velocity turbulence intensity) obtained from simulations using ADM-std, ADM-BE ALM compared with experimental results. We find that yield good agreement wind-tunnel all studied configurations. In contrast, results LES ADM-std show discrepancies and/or conditions. These errors due fact assumes uniform thrust force, thus failing capture inherently inhomogeneous distribution partial terms prediction, we yields better predictions than cases considered this study. As result, conclude provides balance accuracy computational cost farms AYC.
